22 Bonne fête Marie!!
We woke up this morning in the Mt St Helens visitors centre parking lot. Our first night sleeping in the back of the van was quite cozy considering it was the first rainy night of the trip. The weather, however during the day was perfect for enjoying the absolutely incredible site. We climbed over 6000ft up the mountain by car to visit the many vista spots, thank god for the combustion engine!!! We were left speechless at the absolute devastation that is still visible today as well as the scale of the total destruction of the mountain. What struck me the hardest was the fact that before the blow this was a mountain like any other in the area and was a popular destination for for boy and girl scouts. After leaving Mt St Helens we drove across the border into Oregon and straight to Astoria. Right away this town made us feel good. It had a cool main street just one over from the boardwalk along the water, cool shops and nice restos as well as a wicked brew pub. We ate at the Fort George brew pub below 50ft long redwood beams and bedded down for the night in the van at the local RV spot.
